Report Feb 09In September 2009 a new unit was set up for 14 to 18 year olds. The unit is known as SPITFIRES EASU. We are an explorer unit with the Thanet District that is overseen by County. Val the Explorere Leader started with 4 young people who basically were the children of some of our leaders. They were joined by a scout that became explorer age and have since taken 2 from outside scouting. Unfortunately one has decided to go back to Air Cadets. The young poeple have joined in a few county and district events and the Master Chef competition. They also helped at a Beaver Sleepover at Ross Woods in October and the Beaver Christmas Party. They have also been involved in several fundraising events and will be running a bingo evening on 28th Feb. Between them they are all young leaders throughout the different sections within 1st Birchington and have all gained their young leader badges. Three of the group attended Gilwell Winter Camp and two attended a meeting at Gillingham to discuss the way forward for more air activities in Kent. The explorers hope to start some Air Work at Biggin Hill, an Air Camp in July and KIJ All of the explorers are undertaking the D of E award and will be starting their expidition training. This has all meant extra work for the Leader - Val who has taken her Midas test to drive the minibus, started D of E training and hope to attend a leaders flying course and scouting skills day.
