Kaleidoscope - 03-07-2010

On Saturday 3rd July, eight Beavers from 1st Birchington attended the 'Kaleidoscope' event at the Holmesdale Technology College in Snodland. We left Birchington at around 8.30am and arrived about an hour later. It was a beautiful but very warm day and everyone had to make sure they were protected against the sun. Our first task was to erect a small tent so we would not have to lug our bags around all day. After booking in we were allowed access to the entire site. Firstly the Beavers played on several themed bouncy castles, many of which were very large indeed, based on assault courses, jungles and dragons. After this, we split up and three Beavers waited for about an hour to use the bumper cars which also had water squirters, providing some cool relief for those observing! The others participated in archery and mini-crossbow shooting, and also attempted to master the bucking pig, with varying rates of success. After this there was time for one go on the large Transformers themed bouncy castle and then it was time for lunch.

After lunch we visited the reptile house which was very interesting, being allowed to see and touch the snakes and lizards, and startling some Beavers who though they were models! We then went to the circus skills section for a while before visiting the African drummers workshop. As you can imagine, this event was very noisy! While waiting for our next event, we obtained several bags of popcorn to share around. We then entered the Astrodome, an inflated canvas bubble which was very hot due to the number of people inside. The pilot showed us the different positions of the stars, planets and constellations and taught us about the space race and mankind's first visit to the moon. After stopping briefly for a quick cool down and drink, we returned to the field. Some Beavers waited to have another turn on the bumper cars and and crossbows while the others went across the monkey bridge which we had seen some Scouts building earlier during the day.

By now the day was drawing to a close and there was just enough time for everyone to have one last go on the spider's web bouncy castle and (again) on the bucking pig before we had to go and take down the tent and return to the coach. Overall a thoroughly enjoyable time was had by all with the Beavers voting it the 'best day ever!'. Having been out for about eight or nine hours, many were very tired on the journey home and at least one Beaver (no names...) was so tired we had difficulty awaking him when we got back to Birchington!

(P.S. Apologies for small numbers of photos unfortunately my camera ran out of batteries about half way through the day).
