Beavers win football tournament - 27-06-2010On Sunday 27th June, Beavers from 1st Birchington participated in the district football competition in Broadstairs. We arrived about 11am and soon found some shade underneath a tree to escape the heat of the sun. Unfortunately due to various absences we had only four Beavers for this five aside event (Brandon, Edward, Jamie and Jack) but very generously (in view of later events...) the leader of 1st Garlinge Beavers allowed us to 'borrow' one of her team for the afternoon, Harry.
Our first game of the day was against the 2nd Garlinge (B) team (who won the 2009 competition) which we won 1-0 thanks to an own goal. We then won the next game 3-0 against 4th Broadstairs due to goals from Jamie (x2) and Brandon. Unfortunately we lost the next game 4-0 against the 1st Garlinge (Green) team. After this defeat we changed things round by placing Jack in goal with Edward in defence and Jamie, Brandon and Harry in midfield/attack. We won the last group game against 1st St Peters (A) 4-1 with two goals apiece from Jamie and Harry. Having finished second in the group stage, we qualified for the semi-finals to play against 11th Broadstairs who had won all their previous games in the other group. In spite of this, Birchington put in an impressive performance. Jamie scored a penalty due to a handball but we had several close opportunities to score more, though as our defence held resolute they were not required. Having reached the final, we were playing against the 1st Garlinge (Green) team again (yes, the same team who had let us borrow one of their players and beaten us 4-0 in the group stage). This time, however, we put in a much better performance defensively and the goalkeeper Jack made at least four or five saves to keep the score at 0-0. As the game finished goalless, this meant penalties. Each team chose three penalty takers. Brandon, Edward and Harry scored for us, then the last Garlinge taker shot over the crossbar meaning that Birchington won the final 3-2 on penalties! Afterwards we were presented with the trophy and team certificate. Overall it was a fantastic team effort and my thanks and appreciation go to every member of the team who all put in 100% effort.
