AKELA CHANGES HER NAME - 30-06-2009

On July 30th I will be changing my name to Raksha. As you know from that date Richard Phillpott will be sharing the role of "The Akela" with me and will himself be known as Akela. Eventually I will stand down completely and hand over to him.

Raksha is pronounced RUK SHER and translates as "the demon" which some of you may find quite appropriate for me.  It was the name given to the mother wolf when anyone interferred with her cubs.

Changing my name made me think that some of you parents have no idea why we have such strange names and where they come from. Well:- all our names are taken from the Rudyard Kiplings Jungle Book.   Akela (which means alone) was the leader of the pack and is therefore given to whoever leads the cub pack. The role as a cub pack leader is also know as being "The Akela" The name is pronounced Uk-kay-la but usually R-k-lah by the cubs.

There are many names in the Jungle Book that we can chose but here are the ones that we have chosen to use at 1st Birchington.

Bob is known as Mowgli pronounced Mow (rhymes with cow) lee. Tho we say Mow (rhymes with toe) Kipling made this name up and it does not mean frog as some people believe.

Reg is known as Rama pronounced Rar- mer and means the herd bull of the buffaloes. Also quite appropriate for him if you know him.

Richard is known as Baloo pronounced Bar Loo and is the name for a bear.

Iain is know as Ikki it is another of Kiplings made up names for the porcupine and rhymes with sticky.

June will be known as Bagheera pronounced Bag-ear-rah and is the name for a black pantha.

Charlotte is known as Ricci and is from Rikki Tikke Tavi the mongooses

Hannah is known as Phao pronounce Fay-oh and is another of Kiplings made up names for a wolf that would one day become the leader of the pack.

Ben is known as Chil pronounced Cheel and was a Kite.

James is known as Kaa pronounced Car and was another made up name for a python.

Duncan is known as Grey Brother who is a brother wolf who is a loyal friend.

and Marcus when he joins us in September will be known as Jacala pronounce Jack-oh-la and is the name for a crocodile.

So now you know.   As I said there are many names left which we use for helpers and leaders so if you fancy a name change let us know and we will sign you up.
